A Clinical Study of Anesthetic Management for the Past 10 Years (1982~1991)

Abstract
To evaluate the anesthetic management during the past 10 years a total of 23,417 cases which were performed at Seoul Red Cross Hospital from Jan l, 1982 to Dec 31, 1991 were studied. These data were analyzed according to fiscal year, department,
sex,
age, induction agent, muscle relaxant, anesthetic method, main anesthetic agent, emergency state and duration of anesthesia. the results were as follows:
1) The number of patients receiving anesthesia tended to increase year by year since 1986 and general surgery accounted for 33.6% , the largest portion of cases.
2) The ratio of male vs female was 12,263 cases(52.4%) vs 11, 154 cases(47.6%).
3) 25.1% of all patients belonged to the 2nd decade and the eldirly over 70 years was 3.4%.
4) the mostly used induction agent was thiopental sodium and succinylcholine of muscle relaxants was mostly used for the endotracheal intubation and pancuronium for the maintenance of anesthesia. But since 1986 the use of vecuronium tended to
increase
steadily.
5) General anesthesia was performed in 76.9% of all patients and the main anesthetic agent was halothane. But since introduction of enflurane its use increased gradually.
6) Emergency operations were 39.2% of all patients and about half of them blonged to the department of general surgery.
7) In 57.9% of the patients the duration of anesthesia was between l and 3 hours.
